Wellbeing Wales Network E-bulletin October 2009

In February 2008, President Nicholas Sarkozy asked Professor Joseph Stiglitz to create a Commission with the aim of identifying the limits of Gross Domestic Product as a useful indicator of economic performance and social progress. In September 2009, this Commission published the full report of their findings.

One of the key messages from Commission’s work is that national measuring systems need to "shift emphasis from measuring economic production to measuring people’s wellbeing." The need to emphasise wellbeing is important according to the Commission "because there appears to be an increasing gap between the information contained in aggregate GDP data and what counts for common people’s wellbeing." The Commission also concludes that "measures of wellbeing should be put in a context of sustainability."
