Asset Based Community Development

Asset Based Community Development challenges the view that communities are broken or in need. When communities are described as being in need, this develops a dependency culture within that community where things need to be fixed by outside interventions.

Asset Based Community Development considers a community as having assets that are the primary building blocks of sustainable community development. There are five kinds of assets within a community that can be drawn upon to build stronger, more sustainable communities for the future:

  • Talents and skills of people that can be nurtured and developed
  • Associations and networks of people in which the talents of individuals can be magnified
  • Institutions and professional entities
  • Physical assets such as land or property
  • Local economic assets such as local business which can support exchanges (often non monetary).
