According to the Wales Cooperative Centre a cooperative is quite simply a business that is owned and controlled by its members. The formal definition from the International Co-operative Alliance for a cooperative is An autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly-owned and democratically-controlled enterprise.

These types of organisations are often seen in Wales in social housing and to provide affordable, fresh food within local communities.
