Five Ways to Wellbeing
In 2008, the New Economics Foundation was commissioned to develop a set of evidence-based actions that would help improve personal wellbeing as part of the UK Governments Foresight Programme on Mental Capital and Wellbeing Project.
They came up with the Five Ways to Wellbeing that reflected the key findings from the evidence base in the form of five actions that could improve personal wellbeing. They are:
- Connect with the people around you. With family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. At home, work, school or in your local community. Think of these as the cornerstones of your life and invest time in developing them.
- Be Active as exercising makes you feel good. Most importantly, discover a physical activity you enjoy and that suits your level of mobility and fitness.
- Take Notice and be curious. Remark on the unusual. Be aware of the world around you and what you are feeling Mindfulness. Reflecting on your experiences will help you appreciate what matters to you.
- Keep learning and try something new. Rediscover an old interest. Sign up for that course. Take on a different responsibility at work.
- Give or do something nice for a friend, or a stranger.
